For the past few years I have taken part in a reading challenge called Cannonball Read. I had the goal of reading 52 books in a year and last year on my third try I finally achieved this goal. I did really enjoy the community and all the reading and writing of reviews so I decided to keep going, but not to really have a set goal in mind as this year I am focusing more on my health and fitness goals. Here we are and it is almost May and I haven’t even posted a single review. I have read a few books but I haven’t made the time to post any reviews so I am going to make that happen today. I had a blog exclusively for book reviews but since I won’t be doing as many this year I decided to move them over here. The first book is actually quite appropriate with the theme of my blog, but I won’t be exclusively reading health and wellness books, there will be fiction and various other non-fiction books as well.
I decided to read “Crazy Sexy Diet” by Kris Carr after seeing her in the documentary “Hungry for Change“. I was very motivated at the start of the year to learn more about eating clean and plant based diets so naturally reading this book really appealed to me. Overall I really enjoyed this read and it helped me stay focused on my goals at a time where I needed the help. There are some things in this book that I would prefer not to follow (like giving myself an enema) but to each their own I suppose.
We start off the book with an introduction to Kris, how she got to be where she is today and then moves quickly to how to get yourself started on a clean eating diet and all that fun stuff. Although there is a lot of scientific information contained in this book, the tone is very light an humorous (sometimes a bit too much as the cuteness factor is set a bit high for my taste from time to time but you have to take the good with the bad). There is even a 21 day cleanse in there (not the kind of cleanse where you don’t eat but involves eating clean and staying away from things like caffeine and sugar). There is an optional fasting component but the book recommends that you tailor the plan to your specific needs.
Even though I was aware of a lot of the information in this book, it was a great refresher for me and would be a good book for a person who wants to start learning more about plant based whole foods diets. There is also a section that talks about chemical free cosmetics and it motivated me to make a change. I never really considered that I was putting chemicals on my face each day. I don’t wear a lot of makeup, but I spent a bit of money and got a couple of natural versions of products that I use and I feel a lot better about it when I use them each day. There are no guarantees that doing things like this will help me live a longer life, but I figure that it is a step in the right direction and every little thing that I do for my body is something to be proud of.
I am very glad that I bought this book on my Kindle app as I am sure to reference it in the future. I recommend giving it a read, although some of the suggestions in it are to the extreme, there is a lot of valuable information in it as well. I am all about my smoothies and salads and happiness!
